Before and After: The first stage of BPS3’s Hope Garden renovations

The Conor J. Casey Foundation made a substantial impact this season, funding the renovation of BPS 03 D’Youville Porter Campus School’s Hope Garden.

Starting in October, with the help of students from the University at Buffalo, we deconstructed all of the garden’s old beds. In their place, new metal beds of varying heights were assembled. Volunteers also stocked each bed with fresh soil and compost. (This was a massive endeavor – moving more than eight yards of soil in under three hours!)

In this video by Elliott, lead gardener at Hope Garden, you can see the amazing work that was done to kick off these renovations!

Even more footage of the rebuild can be found here. The next phase of upgrades includes installing benches and a learning space for students to get the most out of the garden.

A formal opening of the new garden will take place in Spring, when students plant their own veggies, flowers, and herbs after winter breaks. We’re deeply grateful to the Conor J. Casey Foundation for supporting food access and education through this school garden rebuild!

Beyond the garden

The Conor J. Casey Foundation installed Buffalo’s first charitable vending machine, and GGWNY is one of the featured agencies! Donors can make a gift to one (or all) of its 24 selected agencies in a single transaction through this unique way to give.
