Gardening For All
We believe that all people, regardless of social or economic circumstances, deserve opportunities to engage with the natural environment around them.
The work of our gardeners proves that community gardens can and do revitalize neighborhoods by:
Our gardens enrich communities, teach valuable lessons, and establish deep connections with nature and each other through a shared resource that anyone can visit, participate in, and benefit from.
And of course, they look magnificent!
Our gardeners get the relatively rare opportunity to “do something” that shows tangible short-term change, still has a longer-term impact, and also confers immediate personal and interpersonal benefits.

Community Gardens
Improving Environments We All Share
Whether for your building, your block club, or anywhere in Buffalo or Niagara Falls, Grassroots Gardens WNY can help facilitate your project.
To start a new garden in our network, you need at least 5 committed community members willing to care for the garden for 5 years. Also, ensure you’ve identified a public lot with the landowner’s consent.
While everyone can benefit from a community garden, we believe underserved communities deserve priority. We always approve gardens in neighborhoods that lack grocery stores and accessible produce first.

Gardens Help Students Grow
School gardens are a great teaching tool, helping students learn the value of working with their hands, environmental responsibility, and how gardens foster friendship and community.
They’re also a great way to engage the local community in after-school and summer events, and can even make fresh, healthy produce accessible to families with limited access to fruits and vegetables.

Therapeutic Gardens
Enhancing Well-Being Through Beautiful Botanicals
In times of need or crisis, plants and gardens have a restorative effect on the soul. Grassroots Gardens WNY launched the Therapeutic Garden Initiative in 2019 by bringing local gardeners and stakeholders together to appreciate and understand how public gardens benefit local communities.
Today, the task force of Buffalo and Niagara Falls stakeholders and gardeners meets regularly and includes representatives from:
Also established in 2019, our Grief in the Gardens program explores how gardening can help people process the difficult emotions of grief and cope with the grim realities of violence and systemic injustice.
