Fargo Estate Garden

One of the first 30 gardens to join the Grassroots Gardens WNY network, this historic community space on Buffalo’s West Side occupies a portion of the former estate of William M. Fargo (1818-1881), former mayor of Buffalo and co-founder of the American Express Company and Wells Fargo & Co. Established by neighborhood residents in mid-late 90s in response to drug-related problems in their community, the garden was created as a welcoming space for connection and enjoyment of nature in the middle of the city. Throughout its existence, the garden has been supported by local organizations such as the Fargo Estate Neighborhood Association, neighborhood gardeners from all three sister gardens on 363 West Ave., and 220 Jersey St. (now discontinued), annual traditions such as Garden Walk Buffalo and Buffalo in Bloom, and collaborative initiatives like the National Wildlife Federation’s Garden for Wildlife.
