From the Gardeners:
"This year the student involvement was increased by the work and support of our ESL students. As we were working stories flowed of their home lands and farms along with gardens. Friendships grew and use and understanding of English improved. We laughed a lot.
We are spreading the word through out our division with a seed give away. The club harvested several cups of Marigold, Dill and Black-Eyed Susan seeds. Participants are responsible for designing the seed packs and the instructions for planting cards. We also worked throughout the year in concert with our Catholic Charities vocational support program and Eat Smart NY. "
The garden impacts the lives of our students and our community in several ways. Most importantly, we seek to provide academic services to non-traditional students, ages 16 to 21, as they enhance their English skills and pursue High School Equivalency diplomas. In that mission, we recognize the need to help our student population experience team building exercises to enhance a sense of community. Our garden allows students to work simultaneously and collaboratively to accomplish the goal of growing and harvesting crops.
